Thames Airport Development

Geoff Furkett from Totara Estates outlined an interesting proposal to Council in Public Forum at the beginning of the opening round of the LTCCP yesterday.

He is concerned at development taking place around the airfield that may prevent the implementation of a major expansion of commercial activities as the result of the closure of the number of other airports around the region. Geoff had a number of  concerns about the current management of the airport of a minor but potentially serious nature.

Anything that reduces the burden on Thames ratepayers has to be examined closely – Geoff is proposing that the airport be vested in an independent trust to ensure that rational development takes place in such a manner that attracts the many airport related activities that range from maintenance through the accommodation, and that could have a significant effect on the local economy.

He is proposing an air-show to be run in conjunction with the Heritage week, and taking up on the Sir Keith Park connection.

There is a meeting with the Mayor and others set down for 24 May when a number of these issues are to be explored, and the possibility of a master plan being developed. I will report on this as soon as information becomes available.
