Thames Library Fees

I am sorry to have to report that Cr Connors finally caved in and went with the majority on the question of Hauraki residents obtaining free membership of Thames Library,

There were two voices who indicated opposition to the proposal - BC Renton from Tairua/Pauanui, and Cr Wells from Whangamata, who actually has no discernable interest inasmuch Whangamata Library stands outside the District Library Network. Unlike Renton, Wells has a vote, and asked for his opposition to be registered. Unfortunately Thames rate-payers cannot vote for him.

Despite prompting, the Chief Librarian was not required to keep records that at least show what this gross magnanimity will cost Thames rate-payers.

In the past Thames ratepayers have paid more than $80 in their property rates whether they used the library or not. This ignored user-pays although further library income was gained by charges of one sort or another. Folk from outside the ward were asked to match this payment when they took their first book. Considering the many local folk who don't ever take out a book I believed this was not unreasonable. The librarian's argument that HDC's libraries are free to our ratepayers ignores that we would not use them if we live here and have our own gold-plated edifice. BUT if I lived out on the plains and came to Thames to spend at Pac-N-Sav and TWH AND the library was FREE, use of it would certainly appeal to me. The future cost to Thames ratepayers will certainly need to be monitored as Bill says. Why did the Librarian pursue this new course? Are enrolled numbers at risk?
