HH RIP

The big news this afternoon relates to the Hauraki Herald. It seems that its Tuesday edition is for the high jump, along with most of its staff - either by redundancy, or resignation, and that production of the Friday edition will move to Morrinsville.

This is a very sad day for Thames, but the writing has been on the wall for some time with the Tuesday edition down to eight pages, it could not survive, and with the upheavals in the Fairfax organisation the down-sizing was inevitable. This is despite protestations to the contrary by the New Zealand management.

I will post other information as it becomes available, but I would anticipate major movements in the advertising area. Real estate and motor vehicle sellers for example want to be able to drop copy on the counter at the last moment - not communicate with some face in Morrinsville. Watch this space.

Having lived in Morrinsville for the last six years, with the skinniest and news bereft "news paper" in NZ, with the editor diviing his time between the Piako Post and the Hamilton Press, I can vouchsafe that if the HH is managed and edited here in Morrinsville, the HH will end up being a trade magazine, with the occasional article on stock feed and farm effluent systems

To be honest with you Bill the HH lost its way a few years ago. What used to be an interesting vibrant paper has become very boring and often contained little of interest. Its recent competitor how ever in the local media scene looks like it has the zest and ability to do very well. Lets hope it goes from strength to strength and provides a balanced look at issues that are affecting us
