South African Rifles (Final, I think!)

After several false starts, a permanent home has finally been found for the rifles at the Teasury.

They were dedicated during a visit from Jannie and Bismarck Du Plessis - the very epitomy of the Boer patrimony, along with Ruan Pienaar. Here is the TVNZ clip regarding the visit - welll worth a look! That Bismarck fellow is not the devil after all! Saint Dan has exonerated him in any case.

By amazing coincidence, they all went to Grey College in the Republic, and one of the teachers at Thames High even taught one of them there. Governor Grey was instrumental in the establishment of both schools. They then spent time at the Treasury examining the unique 15 rifle collection.

Altogether a major coup for the Council staff involved, and Mike Dwight - the saviour of the collection, who had originally hoped to have Springboks here at the time of the Rugby World Cup for the dedication. See the TCDC story on the occasion here. Good story!
