Development Contribution v. Rates

Government plans through the Local Government Amendment (No 3) Bill now before Parliament will have long term consequences on rates in most districts where development is taking palce. The situation in Queenstown is outlined in an article on the Otago Daily Times on 1 February.   This indicates that 10-20% of revenue has been obtained form this source, and Mayor van Uden is predicting a 5-6% effect on rates.

It won't be quite the same here with development running well behind the famous predictions of our Council over many years, but it will still be substantial if the DCs are to be removed entirely from the budget.

An interesting dilemma that will no doubt be causing some furrowed brows within the Castle.
