Regional Pest Mangement Plan

If you would like to see just how close was the vote on the adoption of the Plan last week just take a look at this WT report on the matter. Passed 6:6 on the casting vote of Paula Southgate.

It appears that a considerable number of Councillors have fallen under the influence of Clyde Graf and sought to have the plan "lie on the table" - a device that would have destroyed it, and required the process to be commenced all over again. The anti-1080 lobby is becoming extremely powerful in a number of areas - I had not realised that it had progressed to such an extent in this Region, and it indicates just how persuasive Clyde has become in pushing his particular barrow.

Even within DoC, voices are being raised seeking a modification of the 'one size fits all' approach - not exactly anti-1080, but suggesting a more considered approach that recognises the damage being caused in certain areas resulting from the elimination of one particular species leading to the explosion of other genus (i.e. rats/mice) that has and is being experienced.

The problem lies in getting to a point of rationality in the face of emotional opposition that recognises no value whatsoever in the use of 1080.

Hi Bill,

Mr. Grafs antics, as you have described them, are of some note.

This is especially so in light of what I remember him saying at one of the candidate meetings at the 2013 election.

Mr. Graf was going to "use his ticket to ensure that 1080 was banned on the Coromandel Peninsula" or words to just that effect. It will be recorded on CFM's files as he said it at a candidates meeting at Thames where they recorded and it played it live across the Peninsula.

Obviously, the reality of politics have come to bite Graf on the bum because his great claim has (surprise surprise) proved unobtainable with the motion described in your email being obviously all he could salvage.

The vote does appear to have fallen along the lines of the Rates Control 'ticket'.

If I remember correctly, following the 2013 election,Rates Control of which Graf is part, could not establish a majority but did have the numbers to establish Paula Southgate as Chair as an elected Councillor outside their group.

Obviously Southgate did not see herself as being owned by Rates Control, although I am sure that is what was intended at the time.

I hope people get wise to tickets attempted to take over local government organisations. You to be free to debate issues on their merits and be prepared to make your own mind up about them.

Sorry, last para should read:

"I hope people get wise to tickets attempting to take over local government organisations. You should be free to debate issues on their merits and be prepared to make your own mind up about them".

Rush at the end of the day and all that!

And hell, I'll make another comment too - when analysing the calibre of people on the Rates Control ticket, generally they are of a certain simple mind-set that misses completely the real complexity of things. Vercoe, Kneebone and Simcock etc - they wouldn't waste their time with clowns like that.

The Rates Control grouping are a collection of the disaffected, angry and confused. They do not understand what their role should be and are a drain on time and money with their ad hoc revisions and reviews of policy and operations.

Comment from Staff I know is that they border on the loony with Graf convinced that Council monitors his electronic communications..Quite the paranoid conspiracy theorist. While Stark, Buckley and Husband are actively working to undermine the Council in the public arena , soliciting comment from the "angrys" as if that is a true measure. Quite bizarre.

They are making a strong case for appointed Commissioners.

Unfortunately the others have to waste heir time with them as they vote and act as a pack. The RPMS being the latest example of their incompetence.
