It's All Their Fault!

I did say that it was all holiday through until February 2015, but one final item from 2014 relating to the manner in which our Council spins the truth must be reported from the "Coastal News" dated 1 January 2015

In what must be the most puzzling paradox of 2014, our Chief Executive Officer David Hammond saved his best up for the last day of the year when presumably he assumed that no-one who actually knew the situation would notice:

"Someone has to pick up the unpaid bill and that now amounts to a 3.5% rate rise in itself to deal with this one issue. It should have been addressed in 2008/2009."

Followed by this gem:

"Meanwhile the Council's base position has been helped by its reduction of rates, which hit a remarkable -6% decrease in 2012/2013 from what was charged in 2010/2011."

And:

"This has allowed the Council to have a lower starting base to cope with future pressures and shocks, including dealing with the present debt on the sewerage plants."

Mayor Leach followed this with the remarkable claim that:

"So we have been preparing our finances to ensure we are in a better shape to face it." (presumably, the future!)

Wow! So there you have it! - you have to reduce your prices to increase your profit - it is an old business adage that translates into reduced rates leading to a stronger financial position!

And it is all the fault of the naughty 2007/2010 Council - they clearly had no clue what they were doing. It has taken the genius of the present Council to get us out of this hole by reducing rates. I wonder if this method of financial control has been promulgated to other councils in the same manner as the wonderful news about the implementation of Community Empowerment. It seems certain that this gem of an idea would be equally well received in the boondocks. Better still - they could place their spare cash with Ross Management Services for increased value!.

You can be sure that the New Year will be peppered with similar spin from deep within our Council - they may have to employ even more PR people to replace all the planners that have departed. We are indeed in Good Hands!

Didn't you know Bill - the only way to create something from nothing is by magic!

Akro-dabra.

Actually, it really amounts to a fraud on ratepayers - nothing less!

Yeah, Leach is not capable of magic (but then who is?), although he is very good at bullshit.

Why do so many people fall for that stuff?

After all it stinks and it sticks like glue!

The great walks? Yeah right.

The great rates reductions? Yeah right.

Reduce staff numbers? Yeah right.

Stop campervans using TCDC reserves? Yeah right.

Etc. etc. etc.

The guy is full of bullshit and jelly beans.

He will create a big stink when he is finally deflated!

The bit about the remarkable rates reduction helping the council's base position is a tidy piece of gobbledygook - being remarkable, but for other reasons than those supposed by the CE.
What remains remarkable for me is the complete silence from the elected Thames representatives. "A Realist" has strong words for the Mayor, but one thing you have to admire, in a perverse sort a way, is the complete command the Mayor has of his subordinate councillors.
But, equally stunning, is the apparent complete indifference shown to our council and its actions by the great majority of rate-payers. Maybe our elected representatives are mirroring the communities they serve?
We get what we deserve.....

One question which immediately comes to mind---- why didn't the local rag, Coastal News question these 'amazing financial statements' or do they just print the pap sent to them by the Councils PR department?
Is it because the Coastal News fear they may lose their lucrative advertising revenue stream or they genuinely believe the comments of the CEO and Mayor???
If they believe the comments then they must also believe there are fairies in the bottom of the garden as well!!
