Coromandel Heritage Project

Some readers may well be wondering what on earth is going on in the background over the Adam's Heritage Project that was so roundly supported at the September meeting of TCDC, and subsequently rejected by the WRC.

The general impression is that Leach and Economic Development Committee Chair Page have been endeavouring to distance themselves from the document as if to imply that it was entirely something dreamt up and produced by Chris Adams without reference to the Council, its members or staff.

Nothing could be further from the truth of course. It may be that Leach and Page are deeply embarrassed by the outcome of their ill-thought out approach for which they had apparently sought and obtained the support of Minister Maggie Barry. She can be forgiven for naivety and a lack of understanding of the implications of what had been proposed.

Maggie Barry had quite unequivocally snubbed the IUCN idea, but this was not revealed to the TCDC meeting, and Hammond now opines that he he does not expect the plan to be further actioned "in this Council" - what a put-down, and what a complete rejection of the process. It will eventually be very interesting to see just how Adams manages, if ever, to extract any payment for his effort.

In the meantime, and despite all the hoop-la surrounding the presentation of the document, and the support provided in the MSM, it has completely disappeared from the EDC Meeting Agenda set down for tomorrow (Thursday)

I will be in attendance, and I will be very interested to see just how Page navigates his way around this embarrassment, and manages to to put the dissolving of the whole affair in the best possible light. The grapevine is awash with rumours of OIA requests that expose the hypocrisy surrounding th whole affair.

Sandra Goudie has obtained substantial kudos from this affair, and I would suggest that it will constitute one of the nails in French's coffin when eventually the Mayoral issue is put to the test. His profound allegiance to Leach, and his limited understanding of local government politics in this District will become clearer as time goes on, but this was an egregious example.
