New Chum Hearing Committee

Watch the scuttling on Wednesday as councillors race to appoint an independent panel to hear the New Chum application.

The alternatives put forward are for councillor, independent, or a mixture of both. I can't imagine that any current councillor will wish to do anything other than 'run a mile' on their involvement, so expect an outside commissioner  or commissioners (3) to be appointed. I can't imagine that there are a great number of 'independents' lining up for the appointment either - it is fraught with all manner of emotional context.

If approval is granted, expect the pressure to come on immediately for Council/Regional Council/Government to enter into negotiating a compensation deal with the applicants (Meares). The original applicants wanted $20m for starters - that was then - this is now, and I don't expect it to be any less that they go after.

This has a long way to go - my only concern is to see that we rate-payers are not saddled with any form of compensation arrangement - let all the petition signatories and celebrity protesters come to the party by all means, but we owe them nothing - full stop!
