'Taniwha Tax' Update

The Taxpayers Union have advised that Hon Dr Nick Smith was quizzed about the 'Taniwha Tax' in a radio interview on the application of the cultural impact assessment regime. Readers will recall my post on the subject.

Dr Smith refreshingly described the tax as "PC crap" - all good until you read his solution - to give council officials the discretion to disregard such red tape. Wouldn't you know it - he comes from Nelson, and along with his solutions to the housing problem, he appears at times clue-less as to how this place works - the likelihood of Auckland bureaucrats exercising such arbitrary powers in a consistent manner is almost zero. Southerners need a good dose of reality every now and then.

Don't expect the situation to change any time soon. And by the way - I heard Paul Majury on National Radio this AM indicate that the boundary court case referred to in the above post has been settled, and that they can now "move ahead with the settlement." That is a relief.
