Fluoridation - Again!

What a joy it was to see the letters in today's HH from health and dental professionals at last drawing attention to the manner in which local anti-fluoride lobby led by Ms Jane Beck have attempted to influence public opinion with totally unsubstantiated 'evidence.' These people are dangerous, and their messages need to be countered by those who know the likely effects of withdrawing fluoride from our water-supply.

This article that appeared on 12 March in the Nelson Mail is extremely relevant, and once again highlights the views of DHB principal dental officer Dr Rob Beaglehole. This message needs to be repeated over and over - our professionals have a responsibility to ensure that the opposition to fluoride does not have a free ride through to the now inevitable referendum. And they are 'stepping-up' - Great news!

Our Community Board and council have allowed this situation to develop, but they will find out over the next few months that they have let loose an extremely expensive, damaging and unnecessary campaign. That fact should not be forgotten when the next election comes around in October 2016.

At the risk of boring people stiff, every ratepayer needs to understand the importance of responding to this attack on the dental health of every child in this town. The life-long consequences resulting from pseudo-scientific clap-trap promulgated by new-age, alternative health nutters must not be allowed to prevail.

There are six major urban water supplies maintained by the TCDC, only one of which is fluoridated (Thames). If the wish for fluoridation is clearcut in the referendum result ,it would make sense to fluoridate them all. The cost is minimal and the operation simple. And as the experts say 'there are savings from multiple maintenance'. I agree with Bill's view that this improves children's teeth.
