French Shows His Hand

There were indications recently that Peter French was on the verge of announcing his candidacy for next years mayoral election.

His outspoken support on Wednesday for upsetting the current 4:4 East/West councillor ratio by providing absentees with a vote was a fair indication that he was playing a populist hand with the mayoralty in mind. There have been others.

Leach's departure has been long telegraphed - his enthusiasm for the task has waned as some of his 'Legacy' projects come come up against brick walls, but he has undoubtedly had a dramatic effect, for better or worse on our Council over the last five years. It would appear that he has health concerns that have brought matters to a head, and much as he personally may like to stay on to push some of those projects along, circumstances have intervened, and his endorsement alongside French's announcement is not surprising. It was the least he do do in the light of the loyal lieutenant role that French has played through his entire mayoralty.

It will interesting to see if anyone is prepared to throw their hat in the ring to oppose French - the early announcement may be simply to pre-empt any advantage being gained by Sandra Goudie should she have made the same decision as Leach's situation become clearer. I would be far more interested in seeing if there is anyone else out there who may offer a completely fresh approach with none of Leach's baggage, and who may at the same time have other attractive qualities more attuned to the electorate.

Such a candidate may do well to bide his/her time as some aspects of the current council's struggling projects become clearer and disillusionment sets in closer to the election.

I hope an electable option appears, because despite Peter's perfectly adequate chairing skills that have been displayed of late, he does appear to lack the intellectual heft necessary to manage the organisation - particularly in regard to repairing what is a severely damaged corporate psyche resulting from the rampaging style of the current Mayor, and the inadequacies repeatedly displayed amongst the top echelon of the executive.

More later!

Heaven forbid -not another of Leach's boys--chasing grand dreams with ratepayers money.
French, the man who said 6 years and I am out-- what changed that, the lure of money?
The old line of projects to see through- well as long as there is Local Government there will always be unfinished projects.
Dare I say it, Sandra Goudie is starting to look a better option!!

I find Mr French very aloof and very patronising in his dealings with community groups. He doesnt seem to engage well at any level. Hopefully we'll have more options come election time.

You are right Sailing Away-- more at home drinking with the boys [old habits die hard with Boys in Blue].
We need somebody who actually cares, cares about the Peninsula, cares about the people who live here, cares about rates, and most importantly, has read LGA 2003 plus the amendments.
Any Government should be open and transparent--not done behind closed doors as it happens now!

If French is the answer, can somebody remind me what the question was!

French is a good example of obsequient pomposity - delusions of grandeur with no talent but backed by enough people of importance to make him feel justified in this particular style of stupidity.

God help us all.

Goudie on the other hand is a rabid right wing lunatic from contry-hickdom.

God help us all, Peter French included.

It's time to have someone as Mayor who is not the lapdog of the national party or some faction of it.

Not likely I am afraid.

The Abrahamson's and Dunwoodie's of this world have ego's that won't allow for it.

If there is a god, he or she should have stepped in and sorted these b's (Ed.) out long ago!

God help us all.
